May Virtual U: Maximize Facebook Features to Connect with Donors

Date:  Wednesday, May 31, 2017

Time (Check your Time Zone):  1:00pm-2:00pm PST / 3:00pm-4:00pm CST / 4:00pm-5:00pm EST

Description: Join Missouri School of Journalism Associate Professor for what promises to be a lively Virtual U session on several features Facebook makes available for free to non-profits like ours. She’ll walk us through how to use the Facebook Live video streaming service and offer some tips on when and how to implement live video in your communication strategy. We’ll “tour” Facebook Insights, the metrics Facebook offers on each of its pages. This will help you understand more about your Facebook audience, how strongly your posts resonate and how you might adapt to create deeper engagement – and how to schedule those posts so that you’re not always glued to your Facebook page.

We’ll round out the hour with time for plenty of questions… so make sure to bring your questions!

Featured Presenter: We are excited to welcome back Amy Simons, Associate Professor, Convergence Journalism, University of Missouri School of Journalism. Ms. Simons presented at the 2016 Annual Conference in Jefferson City, MO.

2017 ACDN National Smart & Sexy Day

In honor of Women’s History Month, members of the Alliance of Career Development Nonprofits will hold events in March in select cities in the U.S. aimed at helping women prepare for employment. National Smart & Sexy Day events inspire women – boosting their self-confidence so that they feel assured, confident and, most of all, employable. The holiday was launched in 2012 by the Alliance and sponsored by Smart & Sexy, one of the largest privately held lingerie companies in the country.  The official holiday designation is on March 13th.

As part of the celebration, the Alliance of Career Development Nonprofit (ACDN) member organizations will provide a day of workforce training, professional image classes and individual support for women with the goal of enabling them to take action, secure employment and enhance the quality of their lives. Women who attend Smart & Sexy Day events at a participating ACDN location will receive Smart & Sexy foundation garments from Smart & Sexy as well as job seeking skills training from leading local industry professionals and dedicated volunteers.   The impact of the day is to demonstrate how Smart & Sexy, ACDN and their member organizations support women in more ways than one!  Attendees will also be taught how to shop and build a professional wardrobe on a budget.

Virtual U Webinar: The Human Impact of Change

Time:  9:00am-10:00am PST / 11:00am-12:00pm CST / 12:00pm-1:00pm EST

Description: Change is constant in all our lives – as time passes, change happens.  Sometimes change feels good and sometimes it feels down right scary.  Understanding the attitudes people adopt toward change and how to influence those attitudes is a critical key to success when you are a Change Agent – someone who helps others change attitude, behavior, capacity, and/or circumstances for the better (and that stick!).

Yes, each and everyone of you is a Change Agent by the mere fact that you are active in helping others gain self confidence in their appearance and helping them to seek and gain employment – now those are some pretty big changes!  Whether you are working directly with clients, volunteers, staff members, donors, or board members, you are impacting and influencing change.

Wouldn’t it be great to have some tools and techniques to help you effectively lead and impact change?  That’s what this Virtual U Webinar is all about!  You will learn:

  • How change and transition are intertwined,
  • A roadmap for how people respond to change,
  • Tactics for managing problems associated with introducing and implementing change, and
  • Practical tools for coping with and leading change.

Please join us for an hour of great info and insights along with practical tools. We’ll have plenty of time for Q&A, so bring one or two of your change challenges to discuss (and resolve!).

Featuring presentation by Lynda-Ross Vega, founding partner of Vega Behavioral Consulting, a research and human development company, and creator of the Your Talent Advantage™, and ACDN Board President.

Virtual U Webinar: Minding the Gap - Learning on the Job

Time:  8:30am-9:30am PST / 10:30am-11:30pm CST / 11:30am-12:30pm EST

Description: It’s not unusual for nonprofit professionals to operate out of their depth: on the one hand, they are constantly looking for innovative ways to deal with complex social issues that resist easy solutions. On the other, however, it might simply be the case that they lack appropriate knowledge or skills - in fact, there are circumstances where despite almost complete unpreparedness, one feels compelled or pressed to get a certain job done. There’s just no one else to do it. One way of addressing these knowledge gaps is to learn by doing, to accept experience as one’s teacher. But while we agree that experience is indispensable for everyone’s professional development, it is certainly true that it is not the best teacher in every situation.

Join Pedro Branco, Brazilian filmmaker and educator, for a discussion about how organizations should be prepared to enact deeper reformulations in its systems, routines, and practices as informed by research and education in order to promote true betterment of its work.

Before the webinar, participants should read Mr. Branco's blog, "Minding the Gap - Learning on the Job," and prepare to share:

1.) What is a subject or topic that you want to learn and how do you expect it will impact your work? Alternatively, what is a clear problem you want to tackle within your organization? You don’t need to articulate your claim - we will do it together.

2.) Please provide a brief description of your organization and of your role in it, including your job description.
